EASTERN COMMERCE WINS QUAD 'A' BASKETBALL
GOLD

The Eastern Commerce Saints reclaimed their place as the
top High School basketball program in Ontario.
On Wednesday night the #1 seed Saints captured the
Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association Quad A Championship
with a 50-49 win over #3 seed Mother Teresa Titans in Windsor.
The Saints led by 18-16 after one quarter and bumped the
lead to seven at the break.
Mother Teresa, the Toronto Catholic Champs jumped on
Eastern in the third quarter. They outscored them 18-10 and led 40-37
after three quarters.
Eastern recovered in the fourth quarter and despite some
spotty free throw shooting the Saints hung on for the win.
Shamar Bennet led the Saints with 16 points, Jerome Brown
added 12 and Alwayne Bigby dropped in 10.
Ryan Augustine led the Titans with 10.
Eastern has won five of the past eight provincial
championship.
Defending Champion Pickering Trojans from Ajax won the
Bronze medal 38-36 over Notre Dame Welland. The Trojans played all five
games without Head Coach Mike Gordensky who remained at the team's
Windsor hotel. Gordensky has been suspended for one year by
the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association for using two
ineligible players during a tournament in St Carolina over the Christmas
holidays.
In the Triple A Championship in Ottawa, #6 seed Emery
Collegiate from Toronto lost the Gold medal game 57-57 to #1 seed St
Matthew CHS from Orleans.
In the Double A Championship in Timmins, St Thomas
Aquinas from Oakville won the Gold medal with a 55-53 triumph over
Westminster from London.
